TECHNICAL DESIGNER

During my internship at A Sweet Studio, I got to work on their co-op action game, Scalpers. I joined during the final stretch of development, where I got to work on finalizing level designs, balancing combat encounters, and test the game as a quality assurer.

DESIGNING ENEMY ENCOUNTERS
During the final stretch of developing this game,
I helped out finalizing two levels in Scalpers. I worked on enemy encounters as well as pick up-placement on The Yukon Express and Yukon Valley levels.
My core pillar when designing encounters was thinking about pushing the player into the action.
In Scalpers, there is no way to spawn enemies in a fight, so long-range or area-of-effect type enemies were placed to push the player into the fray, rather than away from it. Otherwise, players were forced to backpedal away from the action.
I also made sure to include breathers in between encounters, as to not overwhelm the players.

An example of how opportunities were presented to the player. For example, presenting obtrusive long-range enemies that aren't blocked by short-range enemies.
DIFFICULTY BALANCING
Since Scalpers is playable both solo and with teammates, enemy encounters had to be tweaked accordingly.
I balanced the encounters for The Yukon Express and Yukon Valley in Scalpers. In both levels, difficulty was increased in multiplayer exponentially, as being able to revive your teammates is a significant advantage compared to playing solo.
The more teammates the player had, the more I increased the difficulty as the revival opportunities increased.
